No. 8 women’s basketball cruises past Cumberland

LEBANON, Tenn. – The Lindsey Wilson women’s basketball team defeated Cumberland (Tenn.) 77-47 on Thursday night at the Dallas-Floyd Recreation Center. Kayla Styles and Reagan Turner were difference makers in the game as the pair combined for for 42 points after both recorded 21.

 Styles went 9-of-17 from the field and fell one rebound short of a double-double after grabbing nine boards. Turner shot 7-of-16 from the field and added a career-high six steals. Gerda Paulauskaite recorded her first career double-double after scoring a career-high 11 points and 16 rebounds.

 Styles got things rolling for the Blue Raiders (18-4, 5-2 MSC) in the first quarter after scoring the first basket of the game. A Heidi Huffman three pointer spurred on a 7-2 run by the Blue Raiders that lasted till the 6:42 mark, giving LWC a 9-2 lead.

 From there is was all Cumberland (15-8, 4-4 MSC) as they went on a 14-6 run to cut Lindsey Wilsons lead to just one with 1:34 to play. With nine seconds left the Phoenix took their first lead of the contest at 16-15 on a Katherine Griffith layup.  A Teanna Curry three pointer at the buzzer gave the Blue Raiders an 18-16 lead at the end of the first quarter.

 The second quarter was all Lindsey Wilson as the Blue Raiders opened on an 11-0 run that spanned nearly six minutes. Paulauskaite recorded five of her 11 points during the run. The two teams then traded baskets until just less than two minutes remained in the first half, as LWC led 36-22. The Blue Raiders closed out the quarter on a 9-0 run to increase their lead to 43-22 at the break.

 The Blue Raiders held the Phoenix to just 20.0 percent shooting from the floor in the quarter as they connected on just three of their 15 attempts.

 Lindsey Wilson shot 46.9 percent from the floor in the first half on 15-of-32 shooting from the floor. The Blue Raiders were a perfect 5-for-5 from the charity stripe. Cumberland went 10-of-27 from the floor for the half.

 The Phoenix and Lindsey Wilson traded baskets to open the third quarter as LWC led 51-28 with 7:25 to play. From there it was all Lindsey Wilson as the Blue Raiders held the Phoenix to just 1-of-10 from the field over the final seven minutes.  Lindsey Wilson outscored Cumberland 16-3 over the span to increase their lead to 69-31 with one quarter left to play.

 Cumberland came out in the final stanza and scored the first 10 points to cut the LWC lead to 69-41. From there the teams traded baskets as the Blue Raiders won by a final score of 77-47.

 Lindsey Wilson shot 43.8 percent from the floor and 9-of-23 from beyond the arc as they held Cumberland to just 33.3 percent from the floor and 4-of-16 from deep. The Blue Raiders dominated the glass, grabbing 50 rebounds to the Phoenix’s 29, as LWC added 12 steals during the contest.

 Ant’Treasia Patton led the Phoenix with 14 points as Kyra Tucker added 11.

 Lindsey Wilson is back in action on Monday when the Blue Raiders take on Life (Ga.) at 6 p.m. CT at Biggers Sports Center.
