On Friday, June 15th, 2018 at 11:50 pm Columbia Police Officer Anthony Darnell initiated contact with the operator of a 2005 Nissan car after he observed it parked behind a local business that was closed. The vehicle was operated by 49 year old Vickie Jeffries of Columbia. After an interview Ofc. Darnell, who was assisted by Ofc. Cole, believed there was possibly narcotics in the vehicle. The owner denied consent to search the vehicle.
At that point Columbia Police K9 Officer John Dial and his partner Gunner were called to assist. Gunner has been with Department for a couple months training and just recently got his certification in drug searches less than 48 hrs prior to callout. Upon their arrival a positive hit was made by K9 Gunner and his handler. A search was conducted and methamphetamine was located in the vehicle.
Ofc. Darnell placed Jeffries under arrest and lodged her in the Adair County Regional Jail on charges of Possession of a Controlled Substance 1st Degree Methamphetamine and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
Chief Jason Cross stated, “This is an example of how beneficial the K-9 program is going to be to the Columbia Police Department and its ongoing commitment to combating the drug issues in Adair County. In less than 2 days of his certification from the program, it has already had its first success “
