COLUMBIA, Ky. — No. 4-ranked Lindsey Wilson used a stout defense to sweep visiting Campbellsville (Ky.) tonight at Biggers Sports Center.
The Blue Raiders (14-2, 4-0 in the Mid-South Conference) controlled much of the match en route to a 25-14, 25-22, 25-10 win. Lindsey Wilson runs its home winning streak to 65 while upping its MSC winning streak to 34 straight matches.
Lindsey Wilson sprinted away from the Tigers in the opening set, breaking a 14-14 tie with 11 straight points to take the first set 25-14.
Klara Mikelova and Sarah Cruz each recorded three kills in the set while Grace Blomstedt ruled the net with a solo block and a pair of assisted blocks. Cruz added two assisted blocks in the frame.
The Blomstedt and Cruz blocking tandem forced Campbellsville into an opening-set -.200 attack — committing 11 errors compared to just five kills.
The defense set the tone for the night for the Blue Raiders. Lindsey Wilson tallied 11.5 team blocks while limiting the Tigers to a -.118 attacking percentage, including hitting in the negative for two of the three sets.
Despite the strong finish in the opening set, Lindsey Wilson struggled in the attack. The Blue Raiders hit just .148, posting five hitting errors of their own.
The Blue Raiders’ offense took a gradual step up in the second frame while the defense continued to limit the Tigers in a 25-22 second-set win.
Lindsey Wilson recorded six more blocks in the set, resulting in the Tigers hitting .094 in the set. Cruz posted five kills in the set as Lindsey Wilson hit .250 in the frame. She led the Blue Raiders with 13 kills in the match.
The Blue Raiders built a comfortable early set lead (9-3) in the second but the Tigers managed to climb back in the match late. Campbellsville used a 5-2 run late to cut the deficit to 23-22.
An Alexis Smith kill and a Campbellsville hitting error provided the final two points of the set to give Lindsey Wilson a 2-0 lead with the 25-22 second-set win.
Lindsey Wilson dominated the third set securing its fourth straight sweep with a 25-10 third-set win.
With Campbellsville leading 4-3 in the third frame, the Blue Raiders scored eight straight points and 17 of the next 19 to seize complete control. Lindsey Wilson recorded its best hitting set of the match in the final frame, posting a .310 attack.
For a second time in the match, Campbellsville recorded a negative attack. The Tigers committed eight errors while hitting a -.258 in the set.
Smith led the defensive charge for the Blue Raiders with all five of her assisted blocks in the set.
As a team, the Blue Raiders finished with two solos and 19 assisted blocks in the match.
Mikelova ended the night with nine kills and a .333 attack. She added a team-high 12 digs in the win. Lilo Larzelere added 11 digs in the match
Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 7 p.m. CT on Friday, Sept. 21, as the Blue Raiders host Pikeville (Ky.) at Biggers Sports Center.
