LEBANON, Tenn. – The Lindsey Wilson volleyball team defeated Cumberland (Tenn.) in straight sets 3-0 on Tuesday night in Mid-South Conference action at the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center.
The Blue Raiders (24-3, 11-0 MSC) managed 42 kills on a .316 hitting percentage while limiting Cumberland (11-15, 5-6 MSC) to 28 kills and a .098 hitting percentage for the match. Lindsey Wilson used nine service aces in the match, four from Klara Mikelova and two from Peyton Johnson as three other Blue Raiders each added one.
Sarah Cruz led the offensive attack with a match-high 11 kills – her 19th double-digit kill performance of the season — as she was also able to help out defensively with four blocks. Grace Blomstedt and Mikelova added eight kills each as they recorded four and two blocks, respectively. Autumn Proctor recorded 31 assists, marking the 20th time this season she has recorded double-digit assists.
After trading the first four points of the match with the Phoenix, the Blue Raiders were able to string together 10 straight point to take a 12-2 lead. Three straight kills by Elly Burke spurred the run by LWC as one attack error by the Phoenix, three kills by Cruz, and back-to-back blocks by Paulina Sobolewska and Cruz, as well as a service ace by Proctor cemented the Blue Raiders commanding lead. Lindsey Wilson would continue pushing the pace and eventually take the set 25-13. Burke recorded five kills in the set as Cruz and Sobolewska protected the net with three blocks.
Cumberland was able to respond to the Blue Raiders pressure early in the second set as they were able to trail the Blue Raiders by just one at 9-8. Lindsey Wilson would increase their lead to 13-9 but the Phoenix clawed their way back to again trail by just one point at 13-12.
A kill by Mikelova, two straight errors by the Phoenix and a kill by Blomstedt increased the LWC lead to 17-12. Lindsey Wilson would go on to outscore the Phoenix 8-3 to take a 2-0 match lead.
The third set was all Lindsey Wilson as they were able to lead the set from start to finish. Two straight service aces to start the third frame by Mikelova and back-to-back kills by Blomstedt gave the Blue Raiders an early 4-0 lead. Trading points to a 9-5 LWC lead, three straight errors by the Phoenix jump started the Blue Raider attack as they would extend their lead to 16-7.
After exchanging points to a 20-11 Lindsey Wilson advantage the Phoenix showed signs of life, scoring seven of the next nine points in the set to trail LWC by just four at 22-18. The Blue Raiders were able to score three of the next five points to take the set 25-20 and the match 3-0.
